STATEMENT BY MIKE PARRY ON BARDSEY Special Protected Area (SPA)
To give you my credentials as it were:
I am a member of WMSAG - the Welsh Marine Strategic Advisory Group - a group that was formed by invitation by the Welsh Government following the Highly Protected Marine Conservation Zones consultation/exercise. The Group comprises of about twenty + different interest Groups including Fishermen, Marine Conservation Society, RSPB, Coastal Communities, CRAGEN, RYA etc etc.
The main purpose of the group is to be a sounding board for what the Government are proposing on the Marine front. This follows the disaster of the HPMCZ exercise. I led and was a member of a a number of groups that eventually got the message through that what they were proposing for the HPMCZ's - was totally unacceptable to the public.
I Chair the Pwllheli Partnership, am a former Mayor of Pwllheli, was Chair of the Authority that built the Marina, am a former National Secretary of the Welsh Federation of Fishermen's Association, a former Director of North Wales Tourism, and a former member of the NWWRAC - the North Western Regional Advisory Council - a Pan- European committee that looked at marine issues and in particular fishing.
The point being that I am very involved and concerned about access, leisure and Tourism, which is the lifeblood of the area and indeed Wales in my mind.
The Bardsey issue came up in WMSAG was discussed and we were all comfortable that present users would not be affected. Primarily the extension to the SPA is to hold the status quo and safeguard against future developments of a harmful nature - so the unanimous view and wisdom of those in the room was that existing usage would remain unaffected. What was proposed was reasonable and would contribute to the overall requirement of WAG to have a joined up approach to their overall responsibilities. I hasten to add that Wales are probably far more advanced in fulfilling the European legal requirements - as opposed to the other UK administrations.
I would therefore assure you that the designation is not detrimental to present use and just to underline your concern or any doubts that you have I will query it at our next meeting (WMSAG ) - next month.
I trust this communication allays any fears that you have and that the unanimous collective view of WMSAG is a credible one.
The wording in the magazine article could have been better - and will no doubt will need to be corrected in future.
